Why train with us?

Why Yoga Teacher Training with DEEP YOGA

The DEEP YOGA teaching faculty is made up of experienced and passionate Yoga teachers. We are all first students of Yoga and teachers second. We all are constantly deepening our own understanding and knowledge of Yoga. Whilst on our own paths we have come across other students of Yoga who have benefited from our classes, not only on a superficial physical level, but with time on an equally important mental and spiritual plane. For us, the time has come to formalise this teaching for those who wish to both broaden and deepen their understanding of Yoga. First and foremost for themselves, but also to impart the magic of Yoga to others, as Yoga Teachers themselves. An immensely rewarding endeavour. Our YTT programmes are constantly evolving, but within set frameworks, accredited by Yoga Alliance.

What will the courses cover?

All courses comply easily with the minimum standards required by Yoga Alliance. However, we go the extra mile. All the minimum course hours are made up of face to face contact time, with additional non-contact hours suggested/provided after discussion with the student and faculty. Basically, if you want more, we will happily help empower you, with support/mentoring. If you request our Information Pack, that does provide an overview of the course content.

Will I be able to come to DEEP YOGA regular classes during my YTT?

Yes! A key factor of your training will be regular attendance to key classes on the timetable taught by senior Yoga Teachers at DEEP YOGA, relevant to your course. As you progress within your course you will begin to do hands on adjustments and eventually teach one of our free/donation based classes, under supervision. Basically, signing up for any of the YTT courses will also include access to those classes specified as being required to complete your training. All YTT students get the equivalent of a one year unlimited membership to the Yoga studio, which begins as soon as the course begins, and/or the £500 deposit is paid. Students who request the deposit refund, but have attended scheduled Yoga class, with be charged the equivalent of 1 (or more) month’s membership fee, depending upon attendance.

Will I get a mentor?

Yes! All students will be assigned a faculty member for the duration of your course, and beyond. Your mentor will be there to help you during the course. If things are not what you expected. If the course is confusing. Etc. The mentor will be there to help you through these challenges. The mentors are all experienced Yoga teachers, so will have insight to help steer you through the ups and downs of your training and beyond. What a lot of students don’t realise is that they may also bring new perspectives to the programmes. We all have something to learn.

What style of yoga is taught?

DEEP YOGA’s faculty is made up of Yoga Teachers who have followed their own personal Yoga journey. The beauty of this is that we are able to deliver a broad spectrum of Yoga styles. Hence, we describe our graduates as being trained as multi styled Yoga teachers. This will enable graduates to then continue on their own personal path and perhaps specialise in a style that works best for them. What we provide is a very solid foundation from which to jump start your more focused path, if desired. Students have for example gone on to do specialist training in Iyengar or Ashtanga schools. 300hr YTT students will have an opportunity to be able to specialise in for example hands on adjustments. Alternatively, continue deepening their broad understanding of Yoga as a whole.

How much homework is there?

All our courses are designed so that the students have maximum face to face time with their Yoga teachers. So if you do a 200hr YTT course there will be a minimum of 200hr contact time. This means we also expect students to spend 5hr per week reading set text from the manual, their own reading list, completing any written work set and watching suggested tutorials. The best teachers are those that invest in themselves. Our aim is to have graduates that have confidence within themselves. The more you invest, the more you empower yourself. We consider Knowledge is Power.

How is the course material delivered?

Our teaching styles will be very much an interactive approach. Formal lectures are kept to a minimum. With 100% of all our courses having a minimum of the required contact hours, it enables us to have teaching methods with interactive classes, small and large group discussions, as well as a lot of hands on practical works. We find hands-on exploration of a skeleton is so much better than making notes from powerpoint presentations! Suggestions to help deepen your own understanding will be given throughout the courses. This maybe from written assignments, to reading and watching tutorials from our list of resources. The schedule is designed so it allows you to maintain your non-course commitments, with enough space between classes to digest and absorb the content.

How much asana practice will I need to do during my course?

For the 200hr course the minimum hours of practice and training will be 75hr, including asana. This will be along with a minimum of 10hr of practicum, including observation, leading, adjusting and giving feedback to others.

For the 300hr course the minimum hours of practice and training will be 150hr, including asana. These hours will be split between analytical training in how to teach and practice the practical techniques and guided practice of the techniques themselves. This will be along with a minimum of 30hr of practicum, including observation, leading, adjusting and giving feedback to others.

For the 500hr course the minimum hours of practice and training will be 225hr, including asana. These hours will be split between analytical training in how to teach and practice the practical techniques and guided practice of the techniques themselves. This will be along with a minimum of 40hr of practicum, including observation, leading, adjusting and giving feedback to others. These will be from the 200hr and 300hr courses combined.

For the children’s course the minimum hours of technique, practice and training will be 20hr, This along with a minimum of 18hr of practicum, split between observing specialty classes and teaching specialty classes.

For the prenatal course the minimum hours of practice and training will be 25hr. This along with a minimum of 20hr of practicum, split between observing specialty classes and teaching specialty classes.

The reality for all courses will be that more than the minimum hours required for successful completion of the respective course will be available.

Do I need to be based in Nottingham?

No! Although being based in the Nottingham (the East Midlands) area will make it easier to attend classes. However, courses are designed, structured and scheduled to allow people to commute, e.g. from London, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds and any other region accessible via trains/bus and car. A travel time of 3 hours to Nottingham will mean these courses are suitable for you. There is a degree of flexibility in where students practice. These options if presented/suggested by the student will be reviewed by the course director, to determine there suitability.

I work/study full time, can I still do the YTT courses?

Yes, all courses are designed, structured and scheduled so if you work or study full-time, they are easily accessible. You may have to take a day or two of your annual leave, or stay a day or two longer at the end or start of one term break. But those who do our courses will be committed to their own personal development, so making time for yourself should be a pleasure.

What happens if I miss classes on my course?

You will not be able to graduate from your course unless you complete the minimum number of contact hours required to meet Yoga Alliance standards. As Deep Yoga has more direct contact hours than required, there is some room to miss scheduled contact time. However, if you miss more than those needed to meet the minimum requirements for your course, you will have to wait until you can do those classes in the next course cycle. Under exceptional circumstances you may be able to arrange individual classes to make up for lost time, but there will be a significant associated cost., and there is no guarantee time will be available. Discuss with the faculty, and we will try to help.

I suffer from Dyslexia or have other learning difficulties, can I still do a YTT course?

Some of our faculty Yoga Teachers have experience of teaching those with special needs. Do contact us to see if we will be able to accommodate your needs. Having disabilities is not a reason to not follow your dreams.

In conjunction with your doctor, the course director at DEEP YOGA will support you to determine the best way forward. In exceptional circumstances we may advise deferment to another course intake.

Do you have minimum course requirements?

Yes, all applicants will have to fill out an application form before being accepted on a first come first served basis for all courses. The minimum requirement is that all applicants have an established practice, which may be needed to be assessed, by coming to a class or submitting a video of a requested sequence, if more convenient. Similarly, some understanding of Yoga beyond the asana practice is expected.

Will there be an exam?

Yes, there will be a final written exam to complete. This will be in conjunction with ongoing assessments throughout the course. All you need to pass the exam will be covered in the course, and remember your mentor is there to help. We realise not everyone is good at taking exams, but this should not be a reason for you not doing a YTT course.

Is the course certified?

Yes, all our courses are certified with Yoga Alliance US, the organisation which sets the industry standards. All UK insurance companies recognise these qualifications and you will be immediately able to register with CIMSPA and teach Yoga, if that is your intention, globally!

Why Yoga Alliance US?

DEEP YOGA reviewed all the potential Yoga organisations to align with and Yoga Alliance US was easily the best. Having recently reviewed and comprehensively rewritten their standards they have set the gold standard, to which all other organisations work to. Being a Yoga Alliance US Certified Yoga teacher means you are recognised to teach anywhere in the world. This is not the case with other organisations. We would encourage you to check what other organisations certifications actually mean.

What if I’m running late?

Whilst we encourage you to arrive in good time for your class, we do understand that life sometimes happens and therefore allow a 5 mins grace period for latecomers if there is no one on the waitlist. You MUST call/text the studio/teacher 15-20 mins prior to your class starting and tell them you are running late, otherwise you may both lose your space to a drop in, and/or find the doors locked. You will still be charged for the class. The ONLY exception to this rule is if you missed the class because asteroid 2309 Mr. Spock, struck Market Square!

What if I want to leave the course?

We understand that in some circumstances you will not be able to complete your course. In the first instance we will do as much as possible to help resolve the issues. However, if you leave a course without completing the minimum requirements of the course you will not graduate. Similarly, course fees cannot be refunded, and you will still be liable for any outstanding fees.

What’s the intake for each course?

The maximum intake for each course is commercially sensitive information, hence not disclosed. However, we do have pre-defined class sizes to ensure those on a course will get the full attention needed to successfully complete their course. DEEP YOGA set the standards very high and will never compromise quality over quantity.

I’m not the best in my class. Can I still apply to do YTT?

The simple answer is yes. Many Yoga teachers, including those teaching at DEEP YOGA did their YTT course not with an intention of ever teaching, but for themselves. You may be the same? As a Yoga teacher you don’t have to have the strongest practice in the class. The role of the Yoga teacher is to encourage, support, develop and nurture the potential in their students.
